Gravimetric Method for Paper Moisture

What is Moisture Analysis?

Moisture analysis refers to the process of determining the moisture content present in a sample of paper. The gravimetric method is a widely used technique to quantify this moisture content.

How to Perform Moisture Analysis Using the Gravimetric Method

Step 1: Sample Preparation
A representative sample of the paper is weighed and placed in an oven to remove moisture.

Step 2: Drying Oven
The oven is typically heated to a predetermined temperature for a specific time. This step ensures the complete removal of moisture from the sample.

Step 3: Drying Completion Verification
Once the drying process is complete, the sample is periodically weighed to monitor weight loss. The drying is considered complete when the sample weight no longer changes, indicating the absence of further moisture.

Step 4: Final Sample Weighing
The dried sample is removed from the oven and weighed again to obtain the final dry weight.

Step 5: Moisture Content Calculation
The moisture content is calculated using the formula: Moisture Content = (Initial Weight – Final Weight) / Initial Weight x 100%

Advantages of the Gravimetric Method

  • Accurate and reliable results
  • Widely accepted industry standard
  • Relatively simple and straightforward procedure
